The Bristol East meeting at Brunel Academy was very well attended and we were grateful that Sue Mountstevens (Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner) was able to attend and participate in a question and answer session.
Awards for NHW service 5/6/2014

Jack Bayley has been a co-ordinator since 2007 and has a real enthusiasm and passion for Neighbourhood Watch, encouraging all the residents in the Close to join the Neighbourhood Watch scheme. He communicates on a regular basis, passing information from residents to the Police and vice versa and has set up a No Cold Calling Zone and also used target hardening devices to help keep motorcyclists in his Close safe.
Jack looks out for the elderly residents in the street and by setting up the No Cold Calling Zone, has helped prevent elderly residents from being pestered by rogue traders and bogus callers. This has made them feel safer thus improving their quality of life.
Moped & motorbike theft was becoming a crime trend in the area, so Jack assisted the beat team in identifying and speaking to residents with motorbikes and mopeds to promote a ground anchor lock & chain. The beat team had a supply of these which they were making available to motor cycle owners to help prevent them becoming victims of theft.
When the beat team contacted him about promoting the immobilise website Jack produced his own letter describing to all his members how Immobilise works, which showed his commitment to members of his NHW and to Police initiatives.
Jack produces his own newsletter which he circulates to members. The newsletter includes crime prevention news, a range of useful information about Immobilise, fire home safety visits and the correct numbers to use when contacting the Police. It also includes information about the No Cold Calling scheme and reminds residents to look out for other neighbours.
For his commitment to working with the police in improving the safety and well-being of his community we are delighted to present Jack with this award.

Glen Shearn has been the NHW co-ordinator for her area since 2008, her scheme encompasses four streets.
Following residents raising fly tipping and graffiti issues with her, Glen worked closely with her local beat team and arranged for a residents walkabout to take place in the local area together with Safer Bristol, the Council and the Police. This resulted in Community Payback being employed to cut back the hedges and clear paths. Graffiti was cleaned off lamp posts and fly tipping was cleared. This has improved the resident’s quality of life and greatly improved the appearance of the area.
Glen delivers the monthly beat newsletter and keeps her members up to date on local issues and current advice on security.
The local area had been having an ongoing issue with garage break-ins, anti-social behaviour in the garage area and on the garage roofs. Glen surveyed all the residents suggesting gating off the area and on receiving a positive response, she submitted a funding application to the Police Community Trust. This was successful and achieved half the cost of the project being funded. With encouragement from Glen the residents contributed the rest of the money.
Since the gates were erected there have been no more reported burglaries in this area and anti-social behaviour has stopped. This has greatly increased the feeling of security amongst the residents, and together with the cleaning up of the area has significantly enhanced their quality of life.
For her commitment to improving the environment and the safety for her local community we are delighted to present Glen with this award.
