Police give kids cash to help clean-up Hillfields Added: 27/07/2012

Police have donated £600 to 'Light Directions', the Hillfields Baptist Church Youth Club, to help them carry out a week long clean up their local area.

PCSO Alison Powell said: "This is a really great initiative and we were delighted to be able to support it. This is the second year that Light Directions have carried out the clean up and last year they transformed the area they worked on."

"All too often people complain about young people getting into trouble or causing mischief particularly in the summer holidays but Light Directions are proving that young people can be a real asset to their communities and use their time to actually improve their area."

The clean-up will be taking place between the 13 and 17 August and will focus on cleaning up litter, painting over vandalised walls and fences, clearing rubbish, doing gardening and helping to clear any public paths.

Light Directions Youth and Community Worker Richard Rycroft said; "The idea of this clean-up is to get young people serving their community. Our group will be going out and providing a free service to the people of Hillfields to show what they can do."

The money that the police donated was spent on t-shirts for all the young people and for a skip to help with the clearance. The council's Clean and Green team provided litter pickers, bags and gloves.

PCSOs from Fishponds Police Station will also be lending a hand with the clear up on Thursday 16 August.
