Another opportunity for your members - Doorstep Selling campaign
National NHWN has been asked to request your help in identifying victims of doorstep selling who would be willing to tell their stories. Please see below request.
Following on from the success of the July soft launch of the Doorstep Selling campaign, we are now gearing up for our October burst of activity and as part of this we urgently need case studies of vulnerable consumers, who have been victims of doorstep selling scams, for coverage to appear in October. Having spoken to Consumer Titles there is certainly an appetite to feature the campaign but it is very much dependent on the quality of the case studies that we can offer to demonstrate the consequences of such scams. Details of case studies are needed this month so please can you send through any details asap (16th August at the latest).
Details of suitable case studies should be sent to Mary Reilly (Mary.Reilly@oft.gsi.gov.uk) and Indira Pereira-Lopes (Indira.Pereira-Lopes@oft.gsi.gov.uk). The deadline is 16th August.
If you have any questions on this, do give Mary Reilly a call on 0207 211 8430 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting

Case studies must be willing to speak to the media. We will guide them through the process and sit in on all media interviews so they won’t be on their own.
Case study incidents must have taken place relatively recently (no longer than one year ago ideally).
Consumer Titles will want a human interest angle for example a doorstep selling scam that resulted in an elderly person losing their life savings, an incident that meant Christmas was cancelled or an incident that occurred in the lead up to Halloween - ‘Doorstep tricking’ - linking to the obvious October calendar. Case studies could also be told from the perspective of a carer / close relative.
We will require as many case studies as you can provide, but media won’t use a case study that has already appeared in any other media publication.

Engaging young people - Catch 22 project launched
Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network
As part of an on-going drive to diversify our Network and become more inclusive, we have teamed up with Catch22 to launch the ‘Alumni Programme’, offering members the opportunity to create a number of social action volunteering opportunities for graduates of the National Citizen Service programme (NCS).
Volunteering opportunities may vary from short term roles such as minute taking to leaflet dropping, to more substantial opportunities such as the development of a youth panel, or working on a specific crime reduction project in line with local need. There is no limit to the number or type of opportunities you could offer.
If you are interested in creating volunteering opportunities and engaging young people, take a look at our coordinator toolkit and complete a registration form today. Completed forms should be emailed to enquiries@ourwatch.org.uk.
Following registration, volunteering opportunities will be circulated to young people across England aged 16-18 via a number of Catch22 networks. For more information, please click here.

Community Champions
Nominate a Diamond Champion from your Neighbourhood Watch Information
The ‘Diamond Champions’ campaign is a nationwide search, spearheaded by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, which seeks to reward and acknowledge the wonderful contributions made to society by volunteers over 60 years of age.
The campaign is on the hunt for unsung heroes aged over 60 who volunteer to help others in our communities. People across the country are being encouraged to nominate those in their local areas who really make a difference to their communities. The closing date is Friday 27th July. You may want to nominate someone in your Neighbourhood / Home Watch scheme or someone you have met in the course of your Neighbourhood / Home Watch work.
For more information on how to nominate and the campaign more generally, visit www.wrvs.org.uk/get-involved/diamond-champions
Best wishes,

Have you got a good news story that could feature in a TV documentary?
We received the below request from National NHW today - Wednesday 18th July. If you think anyone in your scheme might like to participate, please contact Claire on the e-mail link below:
BBC1 is making a daytime television series about crime prevention and support for victims and they want your help!
The main strand of the programme features TV presenter Clive Holland (from the programme Cowboy Trap) getting the neighbourhood together to help a recent victim of crime, for example somebody who has recently been burgled. Clive and a builder will get the neighbours together to help fix any damage to the house and make it more secure for the future in order to help put the victim's mind at rest. Clive may also take the victim to a self-defence lesson or confidence boosting session – something which they feel they need to make them feel better and more confident.
Within the programme they will also be featuring 2 short films about initiatives that the police and/or other bodies are doing in the area of crime prevention and victim support, and this is where they need your input. They would like to feature a Neighbourhood Watch or Home Watch group in these films and hear about the good work you have been doing in your area. It would be fantastic if a Neighbourhood or Home Watch group could put themselves forward for this opportunity.
They have suggested it would be nice to hear from a group who are working with young people in a crime prevention capacity and maybe a group that organised to look after each other’s houses whilst they were on holiday - but any positive stories will be considered so if your Neighbourhood or Home Watch group is doing something really effective or interesting, please get in touch!
The contact person for this programme is Clare Wilmshurst, Assistant Producer. Click here to email Clare.
